Our Why: The Reason We Do What We Do

National public opinion poll data from Research!America and the National Science Foundation’s Science and Engineering Indicators show us that:

  • The public expects the research community to share its work with the public. Learn More

  • The public trusts scientists and has high confidence in scientists and K-12 teachers to do what is in the best interest of the general public. Learn More

  • Only 25 percent of American adults can name a living scientist. These adults do not know a living scientist by name, and they do not know where scientists work (i.e., in which institutions, companies, etc.) or in which states they work. Learn More

  • In the absence of a connection with subject matter experts, the public looks elsewhere for biomedical research and health information. Increasingly, the public obtains information from the Internet and social media, which is notable because content developed by non-scientists typically differs substantively with regards to accuracy from content provided to the public by scientists and by the people actually involved in the biomedical research and pharmaceutical development process.
